I have a 4010 diesel converted to 12 volt system. The fuel guage does not work so I got a new one and a sending unit. However, when I install it, the needle goes hard right - indicating the tank is full (I know it is not since the fuel level is below the hole to install the sending unit). I've double checked the terminal connections so they all look fine. The only other thing I noticed is when the sending unit is out of the tank, nothing registers on the gauge. When I install the sending unit, it moves hard right. Further, when I disconnect the sending unit lead wire, it returns to the left - indicating an empty tank. Then, if I touch the sending unit lead wire to the tractor frame (or another grounding point) the needle moves sharply to the right again. From this, it appears as if the sending unit is "grounding itself." But, then again, when the unit is not in the tank, I get no needle movement. Anyone out there experienced this before or have any ideas as to what I can do? Thanks for the help.
