new holland 1715 starter problem

I have a 1715 new holland diesel tractor that was running fine and next day refused to start. I think the problem is in the starter solenoid because I tapped on it with a wrench and then it started right up a couple of weeks ago. However I was going to tow start it to get it out of the field to the shop. So I turned the key the oposite way to heat the glow plugs and nothing happened. So, I was wondering if the glow circuit is supposed to work if the solenoid is out.
