5.3 chevy

I know this topic had probabbly been beat to death-but I am looking at a 2001 extra cab long bed 4*4 1500 chevy. Are these engines any good? what type of fuel mileage can I expect? It is on a lot and they want 10500 for it ( 100000 miles and supposively in great condition). My main issue is no working knowledge of the engine.
