On my Bobcat I used a small toggle switch that was small enough to fit inside of the stick (I think it was rated at 3 amps) and it would only last a short time until I installed back diodes across the solenoids on the selector valve. On the tractor with a bigger switch (switch contacts opening wider, and higher current rating?) it was ok but on that smaller switch I had to have the diodes or after a few operations the thing acted like you are describing, and when I tore it apart the contacts were arced.
