The R was designed by Deere engineering to replace the D. John Deere had upgraded the D about as far as it was practical to do. The D actually lasted into the year of 1953 with the last ones assembled in the streets outside the production facility. The R ushered John Deere into the diesel era which was the coming wave of the future.
