Its been a long time since I sold our "C" but there is no gasket. The muffler split at the bottom and a piece of the muffler tube continued down the side of the manifold where a bolt went through it to hold it in place. I believe that water can run down the body of the muffler and then follow the pipe into the manifold. There is no gasket and the warning you've been given is accurate.
