1948 Allis Chalmers C Exhaust Question

I recently purchased this tractor with a rebuilt engine. The guy I bought it from said the engine had gotten water in it from sitting, down the exhaust manifold and told me never to let the tractor sit outside or at least cover it with a tarp. He stated that even if you put a can over upside of the muffler that water will run down the outside of the down pipe and into the manifold. Where the pipe meets the manifold shouldn't there be some kind of an exhaust gasket? Right now the muffler just drops into the manifold. I've looked through parts catalogs and can easily locate the muffler and the manifold but nothing else.
