filters are essential to keep contaminants out of the oil. Even with little use, particles can still damage the engine. I would think long and hard before I ran it with no oil filter. Now you could probably use nondetergent oil which keeps less particles in suspension, and that might help, but it also leaves crap on your oil pan, so cleaning it every few years is probably a good practice. This is basically how all of your smaller lawnmower engines work. In engines with filters, the detergents help keep the particles suspended so they can be trapped by the oil filter. Like I said, I would try my hardest to find a supplier of good filters and buy a case or two that will last you the rest of the tractors life.
