Oil Filter or no Oil Filter

I have a lot of difficulty finding the correct oil filter for a Perkins L4 engine.(Tecalemit filter housing, Cat no. FA2048, Element no. FG2412)This type of filter could be taken out, cleaned and replaced, it had the bypassvalve on the top of the filter.This whole arrangement is missing from my engine. I am afraid that if I put a cartridge type filter in the housing, it will do more damage than good. I plan to take the tractor to shows and roadruns only, no hard work.
Should I run the engine without a filter or put a close fitting cartridge type filter in?
