Just because you're not hearing much radio traffic doesn't imply a problem with the rig. We're at the bottom of the 11-year solar cycle so you're not going to hear skip. Have you tried to make contact with anyone you hear? Do you have a friend with another CB who can listen to your signal? Your antenna may be shorted, as someone else indicated, in which case you might hear very nearby signals but wouldn't be able to talk to anyone, but that would require the use of the VSWR meter, either outboard, or built into the radio. (Lot's of Cobras have 'em built in.) If you've got the meter, set it to the forward power position, adjust the meter set control to full scale when you key the transmitter, and then switch it to SWR and re-key the transmitter. Anything less than 2:1 is acceptable; if it's showing 5 or 6:1 then you've got serious antenna problems. If it's in the 2-4 range you probably need to adjust the length of the antenna, or have it done for you.
