I have problems with my CB. Its a cobra, I dont remember the type of cobra. All I get is static. Every once in a blue moon I can hear people. I talk, but I dont know if they can hear me. I have the CB running to a switch and then to the battery. I suppose I didnt need the switch, but it looks cool next to my others. I was talking to some people and they said I need to get it tuned, but I've gone to some truck stops and they dont know what im talkin about. In fact, they ask me questions about it. So please help!!

Just because you're not hearing much radio traffic doesn't imply a problem with the rig. We're at the bottom of the 11-year solar cycle so you're not going to hear skip. Have you tried to make contact with anyone you hear? Do you have a friend with another CB who can listen to your signal? Your antenna may be shorted, as someone else indicated, in which case you might hear very nearby signals but wouldn't be able to talk to anyone, but that would require the use of the VSWR meter, either outboard, or built into the radio. (Lot's of Cobras have 'em built in.) If you've got the meter, set it to the forward power position, adjust the meter set control to full scale when you key the transmitter, and then switch it to SWR and re-key the transmitter. Anything less than 2:1 is acceptable; if it's showing 5 or 6:1 then you've got serious antenna problems. If it's in the 2-4 range you probably need to adjust the length of the antenna, or have it done for you.

Have had several Cobras myself. If it has an rf gain button make sure it is turned all the way up. More than once I have bumped that moving other buttons near it.

I Have done alot of Work on these CB's Yrs ago, If ALL You get is Static the Antenna is probably Shorted out (The Inner Shielded Wire to the Braid the Outside group of Wire... and or the the cable is completely broken into I DO Believe the Antenna is at fault...<> For sure even if the Antenna Needs the "SWR" adjusted, It should receive just FINE... The Tune will affect the TRANSMIT More.Larry KF4LKU

I had that problem once with a my CB here in Iowa . Turns out I was the only one within 5 miles that had a CB so I never heard anything but static ! Just kiddin ! ;) Like everyone else said , it's most likely your antenae need tuned with a swr meter . If it's a high dollar Cobra it should have it's own swr meter built in but I don't think I'd trust it . Hopefully a OTRD will read the post and reply . I found that ya can't always use a used antenae with a different cb and get it to work right . But that may just be my luck . Good luck ...Randy

Your friendly, local RadioShack can help. I've been pleasantly surprised that the people working there know what they're doing. They can also sell you a standing wave ratio meter to tune future antannaes.

sounds like you might have an issue with your antenna or coax cable. Even if your swr are to high you still can hear people talking. If you run fiberglass antenna's they can be damaged and you wont even relize it. I drive part time when I am slow at the farm. I use to run 2 fiberglass wilsons. Good antennas just not for when you haul liquid fertilizer on back roads with lots of trees. I switched to 2 wilson stainless whips. No where near the problems now.

tell them you think your VSWR needs attention. there is a device called a vswr meter it tunes the antenna standing wave by shortening the length of the stub to the band. They should know this if they don't Know what your asking them to do You don't want them to touch it take it to a shop that does repair work Shouldn't cost much
