8 volt batteries are just a crutch for a 6 volt system in need of maintenance.

Check your battery cable size, more than likely over the years someone has put on one to small and with wear in your starter things don't spin like they used to...

Bottom line, either go all out and go to a 12v set up or go through and redo the 6 volt with new cables etc... don't waste the time on an 8 volt battery.
