Had the same thing happen to my "76 Ford F-100 years ago. The revits holding the throwout bearing pivot bracket broke, so I had to start it in gear and shift with the accelerator like you did. Pulled the tranny and installed a couple of bolts where the revits had been. I hope your problem is as easy.
