I'd only do it with a half ton if you have a newer (2004 or so) one. The latest Ford F150 is rated at 9500 pounds towing, which gives you 7500 pounds for the tractor and 2000 for the trailer. The "best" Chevy 1500 is 8900 and the best Dodge 1500 is 8600. If you back it up a few years you can only get close to that with a well set up 3/4 ton or a 1 ton.

Despite what many think, the newer pickups can haul and tow a lot more then anyone ever dreamed doing with an older unit. My "mint" 1984 F150 is a "heavy" unit with a 351, C6 and overload springs, it gets schooled by our company pickups that are Chevy Silvarados with the 4.3 V6 and a tow package. 1500 pounds of weight will make mine look over loaded and squirrely to drive while you hardly even notice on the newer Chevy except when excelleration.
