Getting in to Tractor pulling some trying to decide on a trailer Would a gooseneck be better for a 1/2 ton truck than a regular trailer going to haul around 7500lbs. Thank you for any advice

You will be ok with GN but that is pushing it pretty good. I Haul 6000-7000 on a GN with 2002 silverado 1500 on a regular basis. Just make sure everything is up to parr with the truck and trailer , but is still frowned upon by DOT.

The police will love you. That should only be a $2000 scale ticket with a 1/2 ton truck. I would seriously consider a heavy 3/4 ton,or a dually for that much weight. The police around here are even starting to crack down on the 5th wheel RV trailers behind 1/2 ton pickups.

Is does the 7500 lbs that you state include the weight of the trailer? I had a 95 Chevy light 3/4 ton and pulled a 24' gooseneck and anything of 5000 lbs on the trailer was a load. Keep in mind a gooseneck trailer is probably going to weight pretty close to 4000 lbs empty.

I'd only do it with a half ton if you have a newer (2004 or so) one. The latest Ford F150 is rated at 9500 pounds towing, which gives you 7500 pounds for the tractor and 2000 for the trailer. The "best" Chevy 1500 is 8900 and the best Dodge 1500 is 8600. If you back it up a few years you can only get close to that with a well set up 3/4 ton or a 1 ton.

Despite what many think, the newer pickups can haul and tow a lot more then anyone ever dreamed doing with an older unit. My "mint" 1984 F150 is a "heavy" unit with a 351, C6 and overload springs, it gets schooled by our company pickups that are Chevy Silvarados with the 4.3 V6 and a tow package. 1500 pounds of weight will make mine look over loaded and squirrely to drive while you hardly even notice on the newer Chevy except when excelleration.

I would't even think of hualing 7500 lbs with a 1/2 ton you are almost at the limit of a 3/4 ton my 3/4 ton has a pull limit of 9400 lbs , if you go by Manufactures recomendations they tell you that you should only pull 80% of that the truck is rated for . My brother-n-law pulled a GN with a 1/2 Ton Silverado about 2 mo ago he called me from about 125 miles away he had blown his engine . I

I don't think I have EVER seen a Goose Neck with a 3/4 ton, let alone a 1/2....Go get a cheap F-350. You can get a used one for under $7,000.00. What 1/2 pickup are you using F-150?

Ditto what Matt said. I see people pull goosenecks pulled with 1/2 tons every day. Goosenecks are easier to pull than a tounge pull.

I too am in the market for a pickup to pull my tandem trailer. While I plan on getting a dually, I was surprised at what I saw at the only tractor show I attended this summer. I saw three half ton/GN rigs, each with two tractors on them. One trailer had an H and a C Farmall; another had two Marry Harris tractors of about the same size. None of the rigs or tractors were low dollar. I have no idea how they handled/stopped, but apparently they did the job. In my younger days, pushing the limits was a challenge to me. I no longer think it's fun pushing the limits of anything whether it's a screwdriver, an electric drill, a tractor, or a truck/trailer. I especially don't like pushing the limits when the law is involved. The term, "long arm of the law" was coined for a reason!

I would agree that a gooseneck would be a better choice. For those of us with toppers on our trucks, this link offers a viable option.

Yes a gooseneck is better. Are you hauling a tractor weighing 7500 lbs? you will need 5000 lb axles, even with some weight on PU.7500 lb load on top of trailer weight is a lot of load for a 1/2 ton.

I regularly haul a 9,000 lb tractor on a GN with a 1 ton dually and it is a comfortable load.
I would not even consider 7500 lbs on a tongue pull. In fact after owning a GN I could not go back.
Good trailer brakes and a well maintained truck and trailer are essential.
Be safe!

Bill

7500 lbs with a 1/2 ton is, in my view, on the upper end of what is safe to tow. If you must though, a gooseneck would be the safest way. I bought a 1 ton dually, and it's so much more stable than even a 3/4 ton. I'm amazed with what some people tow, and tow with. The risk just isn't worth it.

There are several advatages of pulling a gooseN trailer over a bumper pull. You have better control over your entire rig when pulling a GN trailer. A 1/2 will pull a GN trailer, but you have to think about what you are doing to your truck. The Free floating axle, which is under a 3/4 and up is built to carry the heavy weight. The weight on the truck bed should be within the gross carrying capacity of the truck. The weight you are carrying on the trailer is held up by the trailer wheels and the tongue hitch. If it is a bumper hitch, then the rear bumper is carrying the weight, whereas the GN trailer weight is carried in the bed of the truck, where it is suppose to be. My first GN trailer, I built myself and pulled it with a Ford 1/2, with a 292cu motor. It would pull it, but did not like to race anyone. Myself, I would not back up to a bumper hitch,if there was a GN available....
Good Luck

Gooseneck is better on any truck in my opinion they pull easier and ride bettter. I have both The only disadvantage to the gooseneck is the height of loading but now you can get the low profile trailers that are the same height as a car trailer. The low profile gooseneck is the trailer i would recommend if just going to haul one tractor.

It better be one heck of a 1/2 ton to haul that much. I know my 1/2 ton will but is an old Chev heavy half and I have since done a lot of work to it so I can. Now as far as the trailor yes a goose neck or 5th wheel type is far better then a bump pull type. Either one of the one goose neck or 5th wheel puts more of the load over the whole truck instead on just on the bake end of the truck

Hi folks. I have owned and towed 3 different travel trailers mostly within the manufacturer's tow ratings of the tow vehicle. When using a half ton of any kind on a regular basis the front brakes wear out much faster than they do on a three quarter ton. plus the 3/4 handles much better towing.

I agree for me thatd be pushing a 1/2 ton, esp w/brakes not power. Gooseneck is far better, also puts more weight ont he front axle, no light steering. Can you believe they ahve a 10,000 lb tow rating on a toyota tundra????? I dont wnat to try it

our 1981 F350 dually is only rated 10,000 lbs.but it has handled that much in the dump bed ! if we went by the ratings we could only haul around 4000 lbs.
