Howdy folks, For being a rare event there sure seem to be an awful lot of us who have experienced this. Back in the spring dad and I were working on a John Deere H trying to fix some electrical issues. We had the battery out and had it charging for a day or so. We were also trying some different ideas to get the tractor"s magneto fixed. I was sitting on the cultivators near the front of the tractor and was going to hook up the battery to see if our idea had worked. I had the battery sitting on my lap because it was so hard to get it in the tractor due to the cultivators being in the way. I thank the Lord that the cables were too short. I put it in and was standing about 10 feet away when we tried to start it. Dad was back behind the rear axle. The battery on these things if you recall is just behind the radiator and ahead of the valve cover. As soon as dad hit the starter that thing blew into a hundred pieces. It took a good bit of time to get my hearing back to full force. What a mess though. We spent a good hour puttin as much baking soda as we could find on parts of that tractor to keep the acid from doing a bunch of damage. It didn"t hurt it though. You talk about gun shy though, whooeeey. God bless. --old fashioned farmer
