Well, I just used up a years worth of luck. Battery exploded on my snowblower. Sent pieces 30' away, fortunately I was standing behind it when it blew. I had a battery maintainer on it for a couple of months, only thing I can figure is the electrolyte was low, and a plate sparked. PS, no the battery was not unhooked and the polarity was correct.

Will sure make me gun shy of battery work.

i learned my lesson the hard way was welding on a firetruck just above the battery that I had just removed the metal cover from. Didn't think it hurt since it not being changed. there was some hydrogen waiting for just the right time and spark and it blew the side right out of the battery. since I well above it I was OK but I could have been closer and on the side that it blew.
Never did that agian always removed batteries when welding in same area.

I have seen batteries completely dry after being on a battery maintainer for several months.Realized fluid level should be checked regulary as a small charge is constantly going going in.

I had a 65 Ford van that the battery was in a metal box behind the drivers seat inside. It blew up on the way to Florida one Christmas from over charging. I never had one do it from a spark. Wish I still had the van.

I guess I'm the luckiest here. I was unhooking one from the charger when I was about 14 or 15. My face was about 12 to 18 inches above the top of the battery when it exploded. I didn't have glasses or anything and had my eyes open when it went. I lost sight for a couple of minutes but was able to find my way from the shop halfway to the house when my sight was just starting to return. Daddy met me and we went to the kitchen and started washing my eyes out. I didn't have any lasting effects but kept a couple of indentions in my face for a couple of days where the battery caps hit.

Howdy folks,

For being a rare event there sure seem to be an awful lot of us who have experienced this. Back in the spring dad and I were working on a John Deere H trying to fix some electrical issues. We had the battery out and had it charging for a day or so. We were also trying some different ideas to get the tractor"s magneto fixed. I was sitting on the cultivators near the front of the tractor and was going to hook up the battery to see if our idea had worked. I had the battery sitting on my lap because it was so hard to get it in the tractor due to the cultivators being in the way. I thank the Lord that the cables were too short. I put it in and was standing about 10 feet away when we tried to start it. Dad was back behind the rear axle. The battery on these things if you recall is just behind the radiator and ahead of the valve cover. As soon as dad hit the starter that thing blew into a hundred pieces. It took a good bit of time to get my hearing back to full force. What a mess though. We spent a good hour puttin as much baking soda as we could find on parts of that tractor to keep the acid from doing a bunch of damage. It didn"t hurt it though. You talk about gun shy though, whooeeey. God bless.

Batteries explode with more frequency than you might think. It always send chills down my spine to see someone with a cigarette in their mouth working on or servicing a battery. I had one pop one night but it blew all the caps off instead of bursting the case, luckily I was near the side tap at the house and got my face washed off before I got chemical burns..beware of batteries!

Was hauling ear corn a few decades ago, hopped on the Ford 960 after unloading, turned switch on, hit the starter button & WHAM, bits of plastic all over & I couldn't hear for 5 seconds.

Mom thought I was a gonner.

Pulled a battery from another tractor, got it in place, & made it back to dad picking without losing any time.

Maybe shoulda changed the shorts tho.

Was a real lesson on what those batteries can do, if a person hasn't been there, you have no idea of what can happen & the explosive force.

Somebody was looking out for you. Mechanic Buddy was hooking up a Battery when it exploded, He lost most of the hearing in one ear, bad scaring from getting hit with the plastic, and some pretty good chem burns. When we were cleaning up i found the pos cable hooked up to the "pos " post or what was left of it. Lucky he was wearing safty Glasses. Explostions very rare but they happen

Had one explode on me several years ago. I was testing it to see if it had any charge by shorting across the terminals.
Stupid idea which I had done all my life.
It exploded and I thought I had lost my hand.
Fortunately my face was not over the battery or I would have been seriously injured.
I was lucky. The only thing I lost were the clothes I was wearing.

BTDT, About 25 years ago. My dad was alway afraid of fire. When we got through combining at the end of the day, he always disconnected the battery on our Gleaner F. Well one evening, it was dark, I cooled it off, shut it down and went back to unhook the battery, the wrench I was using on the positive cable touched the frame, and KABOOMMM!!! Luckily I was not hurt, just surprised. The Battery had been charging all day and I guess giving off some hydrogen, when i sparked across from the wrench, Good lesson.

That's why its always better to take the ground side off first and put it back last.

It's a good idea to install a battery cutoff on all equipment you intend on doing this..... ..Harber Freight has them for $5.....

All good reasons to use a gel cell. Sound like some hydrogen explosions and some pressure relief type explosions.

I've been lucky given the rotten old batteries I always seem to have around. The new ones all seem to short a plate and die rapidly whereas the oldies keep going.
