I think this is done on a regular basis, maybe to get a tractor right back to work. I was thinking of doing this on my JD 401 industrial. It is a four cylinder. Idecided to take the engine out. I am glad I did. I had a bad crank, and the block needed new maincaps, and line bore, as the mains spun in the block. You will be unable to change the rear main seal if it is one piece. Plus as soon as you get it back together and running you will discover the clutch throw out brearing is bad. I don't want to rain on your parade, but If I were you I would take the time and take the engine out. Stan
