Farmall A PTO

I have an A I bought about three years ago with an IH 100 loader already mounted and live hydraulics added. I am thinking of using the A for running a pull type 7' sickle mower with hydraulic lift.
my question is that I think I read that the A is odd in that the PTO runs opposite and faster than normal tractors.
Is this true and, if so, why did they do that?
Can I slow it down if need be other than by throttling down?
Do you think the opposite direction would affect the mower since it is an old David Bradley belt driven?
By the way, I learn a lot on this forum just reading thru other's concerns.
