Sounds about like a typical Lucas starter. I think you'll find that the drive is actually hitting the flywheel and not quite engaging. Keep smacking it with the key. It might take 2 or 10 or 15 tries, but it will generally engage. BT/DT many many times. It's rather annoying.... but not a big deal. I would suspect that before I pulled the starter. It's hard to know for sure what's wrong, but I wouldn't ant to tell you to go buy a starter or a solenoid, both of which are rather expensive. Just try it again and again on the key.
