A lot depends on the size too. Atleast around here... Some sizes the 3 rib is the only one available w/out special order, and some sizes only come in 4 rib w/out special order anymore. We always thought the 4 ribs grabbed a little better, but then again the 4 ribs were ussually a little fresher than the worn out 3-ribs. When they're bald, niether one will grip... I could do an experiment on our 1855 if I was feeling really motivated to swap tires around... We've got 3 tri-rib and 2 quad-ribs all on the same rims from our 1855, 1755, and a spair I picked up when I traded a smaller 7.50-16 w/ another guy on this board.
I just did out a pair of the tri-ribs on our 285 though because the quad-rib 10.00-16's were bald and the 1755 was dead on 2 good fronts. Sorry, got rambling again... Any way. I could put the pair of quads on the 1855 in the spring, do some feildwork, then I could go back the the tri's and see if there is any difference. Trouble is, it's alomst impossible to find a 3-rib 11L-15 anymore (if one would go kablewy) w/out special ordering it, same thing with most front tires. Some are just easier to come by. Right now the 1855 has one of each.
