Just wondering what you guys prefer and why? I am needing to put a set of fronts on my 1256 and trying to decide which way to go. It looks like the 4-rib might wear better??? But the 3-rib might turn better in loose soil??? Just wondering about other opinions and experiences?

3 ribs steer better and pack worse than 4 ribs

A lot depends on the size too. Atleast around here... Some sizes the 3 rib is the only one available w/out special order, and some sizes only come in 4 rib w/out special order anymore. We always thought the 4 ribs grabbed a little better, but then again the 4 ribs were ussually a little fresher than the worn out 3-ribs. When they're bald, niether one will grip...

I could do an experiment on our 1855 if I was feeling really motivated to swap tires around... We've got 3 tri-rib and 2 quad-ribs all on the same rims from our 1855, 1755, and a spair I picked up when I traded a smaller 7.50-16 w/ another guy on this board.
I just did out a pair of the tri-ribs on our 285 though because the quad-rib 10.00-16's were bald and the 1755 was dead on 2 good fronts.

Sorry, got rambling again...

Any way. I could put the pair of quads on the 1855 in the spring, do some feildwork, then I could go back the the tri's and see if there is any difference. Trouble is, it's alomst impossible to find a 3-rib 11L-15 anymore (if one would go kablewy) w/out special ordering it, same thing with most front tires. Some are just easier to come by. Right now the 1855 has one of each.

Gotta agree with Allan, Tri-ribs are the only way to go.

This is just my opinion, so hope I don't get jumped on.

However, nothin' "bites" or "tracks" like a tri-rib.

Alan glad you posted I noticed in one of your pics looks like you have a set of each. I am thinking the 3 is probably what I'll go back with since I really have no complaints with them.

Not for long.

Those "fatties" are going to see the business end of the city dump. I just can't stand the things and how they make the tractor "behave".

'Spose they might be okay for front-hang loader work, but not for me.

We all do things differently from one another. I'm not really sold on radial rear tires either. They just might have to take a trip to the burn pile as well. :>)

Mornin Allan! Let me tell you a story about rear radials. I bought a new 4630 JD and hitched a five bottom plow to it that was the same model as I was pulling with my 4320. The 4630 had new 20.8 x 38 Field and Roads I had just put new 18.4 x 38 BFG radials on my 4320. Plowing the same land, same depth, same plows, in black gumbo, I could pass the 4630 every six rounds. Both tractor were running stock pump and RPM settings. Made a believer out of me!

Did both tractors have the same gear ratios? They'd have to have the same gear ratios and the same tire diameters and wheel loads for a fair comparison at the same rpm.

Boy, I dunno Scott,

Can you really say that was the tires? I've never seen a diesel yet that would pull worth a darn when new.

Don't ya think? They are just plain "doggy" right out of the box. :>)

No doubt...they were decompressed from the factory...a little too much. Higher compression piston " woke 'er up". I dunno..the differance was soooo dramatic...I just felt we always had better luck with radials. I'll never forget my Dad calling me one morning and telling me that 4320 had two flat inside tires (duals were on it)
I came out and had to explain it's just the way radials sit.
