Actually it can be cut and spliced, but its not easy. you have to freeze the bulb to hold most of the liquid, then you can cut the tiny tube and change its length, then you swage it or find a tube to fit over the outside and splice it. There's a web page somewhere I've seen that tells all the details. Its not a trivial task and I don't know what happens to the calibration.
