The Oliver foundry in Charles City, Iowa liked to make wheel and front weights and counter weights for forklifts from cast iron. It gave them the opportunity to use up molten cast iron that had cooled to the point of being useless for anything elst where strength and hardness specifications had to be met. You are going to have weights that are soft, hard, and anything else in between.
