What are tractor wheel weights made of, and is it possible to drill holes in them?

They could be made of a lot of things. The Scrap buyer would probably consider them #2 cast which is not made to machine. It is cast to a finished shape I believe. They might put anything in them from ball bearings to HSS chips. It all weighs the same and the weight is what you are looking for. #1 cast is made of material that is machinable.

The Oliver foundry in Charles City, Iowa liked to make wheel and front weights and counter weights for forklifts from cast iron. It gave them the opportunity to use up molten cast iron that had cooled to the point of being useless for anything elst where strength and hardness specifications had to be met. You are going to have weights that are soft, hard, and anything else in between.

Yup, just a low-grade cast iron. NOt to hard to drill, you just need to keep the drill straight. A cheap carbon steel drill won"t last long in anything, go with a High Speed Steel (HSS) bit.

They are indeed cast iron but are not too hard to drill. The previous post was trying to drill cast wheels apparently which are much harder and a higher grade of cast .Wheel wgts. generally are low grade cast iron.

They are mostly cast iron. But you have to have a good drill. Because this one time i was hired to drill 16 holes in a John Deere 4wd for a dealer. and man were they hard. Tore up 2 drills and 5 bits and multiple sharping of the bits.
