When I was 15, I bought a Model A Ford for $10. It had not run for a while and to loosen up the engine we pulled it with a tractor, not to start it but to loosen engine up. First I had it in hi gear, then second, then low and on into reverse. I was really going to loosen it up, it was then that it started sounding different. Problem was, teeth had sheared off the non metallic cam shaft gear. This, I attributed to the fact that the cam has a steeper angle on the back side than the front side and it required more torque to rotate it backwards. This may be what you are looking at. NEVER, try to turn an overhead cam engine backwards with the timing belt connected.
