OT Help Truck Transmission Problems!

Now that the cold weather is here my 2000 Chevy Silverado's tranny is throw fits. If the temp. is below 30 deg. or so it won't shift out of second gear untill the engine is at least half way warmed up or between 160 and 210 on the temp gauge. After that it is fine untill it sits for 3 or 4 hours then it acts up again. I won't have a lot of money to fix it soon so I hope its a cheap fix. I thought about getting a heat magnet to put on the pan as a temporary fix. Anybody experiance problems with these? This truck has the 5.3L engine and the lighter duty trans. Thanks for your help.
