The 3688 was a restyled 986 but there was almost NOTHING in common between a 5088 and ANYTHING built as an 86-series. Everything from the flywheel back was all totally redesigned to be the Deere-Slayer IH hadn't had since the early 1950's. The Synchro-Tri-Six transmission was totally progressive as opposed to JD's Quad-Range, 3-point components were all heavier, nicer cab (IMHO) The paint did fade on the sheetmetal on the 88-series since IH switched paint suppliers at the same time they released the 88-series. Frankly, I'd get the IH since nicely kept examples will actually appreciate in value.
