Someday i'd like to have 150 acres I was thinking I could get by planting soybeans and corn with a 5088 and a kinze interplant, probably a 6 row with 5 spliters. Any way I'm in college right now, and occasionaly do some researh on equipment I could maybe someday hope to afford. So I pose the question how good all around is a 5088. I would like to purchase a tractor I could have around for quite awhile and be paid for.

You would be better off getting a 7120.

I'd like to have a 7120 that was my weapon of choice when I was a hired guy. The only thing is it' be about $10,000 more for a 7120 with the same hours as a 5088. I don't know though, my next little project as far as reasearch goes is what I could possible do about financing one of the two. I'm only 22 so 7120 is my favorite tractor of all time.

Maybe so,

However, I went to town with a pocket full of cash one day fully intending to drop $50K on a 4X4.

Had to walk right by a 7220 to buy my old 1066.

Never seen so much darned plastic assembled in one location in my life. :>)

The 5088 is a dammed good tractor,, great engine,,tough trans and real tough rear end.
The 88 series was basically an improvement on the 86 series which was pretty reliable.
Prepare for a paintjob however as they had the most dimal paintjob of any american made tractor before or since.

The 3688 was a restyled 986 but there was almost NOTHING in common between a 5088 and ANYTHING built as an 86-series. Everything from the flywheel back was all totally redesigned to be the Deere-Slayer IH hadn't had since the early 1950's.
The Synchro-Tri-Six transmission was totally progressive as opposed to JD's Quad-Range, 3-point components were all heavier, nicer cab (IMHO) The paint did fade on the sheetmetal on the 88-series since IH switched paint suppliers at the same time they released the 88-series. Frankly, I'd get the IH since nicely kept examples will actually appreciate in value.
