If you can look at the numbers with a scan tool, you can see what the 'puter thinks the coolant temperature is, to see if it is reasonable.
If way out of whack, suspect the coolant temp sensor, associated wiring, or a bad ground connection.

I can't recall if they were using a "charge air temperature sensor" or "intake temperature sensor" by 1994. If you have access to a scan tool, look for those numbers too, and, if used, see if they are reasonable for the ambient temperature the vehicle is operating in.
