I hate to think about counting how many chickens I have around here. Mostly show chickens but a few layers. The old timers will tell you that when the days in the fall get to about the same length as the days in the spring when the chickens are normally laying some birds will have a second spring and lay/hatch a set. I have a light Brahma large fowl hen with 11 chicks running around out there now. They don't grow fast in the fall due to temps and the dew/frost means you need to keep them somewhere dry. Mom will brood them a lot but if they are constantly getting soaked it won't save them. Mostly I stop all production after the end of July. Too much work keeping those late hatches alive. Make sure they have constant food and water and are dry and you may be surprised what a good hen can pull off.
