Allan, Don't give up on the plug at the back of the head just yet. It sounds like it is a 5/16" square socket-head plug. Snap-on makes the proper tool for it. Find a Snap-on guy and ask him for a PPM-410. Mack engines use that same odd-ball sized plug and without the proper tool are next to impossible to get out. Good luck, Scott
