As was suggested, get a 38 Special revolver with bird shot. A semi auto is going to be more problems than it is worth. Check with your local dealer but as I remember CCI offers bird shot loads in 38. Typically I use a .22LR or .22 Mag. but it is a little harder to hit the snake.
