Earlier this year we bought a few acres in north florida and are planning a move next year, the place is kinda out in the boonies and the neighbors say there are gobs of rattlesnakes around (3 dens on my land) and Im gonna pick up a cheap semi-auto pistol to carry when Im mowen/clearin etc. just wondering what kind of shot rounds are made for 32,38,9mm pistols? anybody got any suggestions....
P.S. Id kinda like to be able to be able to discourage em 8-10 feet away.....Don

I agrre with the revolver for snakeshot. Ayou might not get that second shot off in an auto as shotshells don't always function god in them. Also, if you happen to do some reloading or know someone who does you can get the capsules and load your own 38 or 44 shotshell. Cheaper than buying the ones at the factory plus you can use whatever shot size you want.

Good single shot 410 with the barrel cut to the minimum legal limit would work really good, not take alot of space, and the shells would work alot better that the pistol shotshells.

A old 38 will work great for you.Get some snake shot. It's always going to work, with no jams like a auto with shot.

I use a stainless steel .38 Special. Two inch barrel. It's good to about 15ft. These shells are about 9.95 for the box of ten, last time I bought some. I see them on the shelf for a variety of calibers. Cheaper than practicing enough to be able to hit a snake with the hollowpoints.
Good hunting, Wm

Since I can't use a shotgun anymore (two shoulder replacements) I use a 9mm Beretta with snake . shot. it does the trick Several gun dealers around here carry sort of a pistol using 410 loads. My neighbor has one an he claims its as good as my 9mm. either one is good at 10 -15 feet .

look around the gun shops and get a .410 pistol, double barrel be the the best and put 7 1/2s in it.
they wont get away from that and you wont have to aim over your shoulder running away like i would:)

I've got prairie rattlers out here in southern Colorado. The heel of my boot takes care of 'em pretty good.

If I had snakes that big I'd be throwing my boot at 'em to from a distance too! Prairie rattlers are only about 30" long and strike about 1/2 that far. They're shy and rather slither away than fight. Want me to send you a few?

I like a Ruger Mark II stainless in .22 long rifle for snakes. Sig Sauer P220 in .45 or a Keltec .32 (guns I normally concealed carry) do fine too but a bit of overkill for a snake.

The Keltec's nice b/c its so light, polymer frame, just weighs ounces. Accurace isnt great and its better against a man sized target than a snake sized one. The Sig and the Ruger are much more accurate.

As was suggested, get a 38 Special revolver with bird shot. A semi auto is going to be more problems than it is worth. Check with your local dealer but as I remember CCI offers bird shot loads in 38. Typically I use a .22LR or .22 Mag. but it is a little harder to hit the snake.

I know you said pistol but I would mount a scabbord on the machine and carry a short barrel 12 ga pump shotgun with 7 1/2 shot shells, like police officers carry in their squad cars.

I don't like them dang snakes.

The solution in Florida used to be, fence it out and turn in a bunch of hogs. If you can shoot a gun, you are likely where you can run hogs.

My brother died from a rattlesnake bite when he was 2 1/2 years old. Be careful.

I have used .357 mag. shot capsules on rats with real good results and would think they should work as good on a snake.

Having been there and done that, I don't think your going to find that snakeshot rounds will work awfully well in an autoloader. They tend not to have enough poop to cycle the action, and also tend to jam.

My solution (living in snake country in SC at the time) was to get a cheapo .38 revolver and keep it loaded up with shot. Works wicked good...

I was thinking that shot might not have enough mass to work an auto but a friend told me that it was the wad that caused the recoil, seems to me it might take both...what kinda effective range ya have with your 38? And what are the rounds called?

Taurus makes a revolver, a model 44 ten.

It will load either a 2.5 "410 shotgun shell, or a .45 long colt. Comes in different barrel lengths, and in either stainless or blued.

You should be able to find it much cheaper than the MSRP.
