Some say to whack the end of the axle with a post maul. Yes, it may work, but why bang on something you're not trying to move? I've posted my idea before on the JD board, but to save you the bother of looking it up -here it is: Find a heavy wall pipe large enough to slide over the axle, long enough to reach beyond the axle end. Cut away 1/2 the circumference on one end, about an inch or two. Weld a heavy plate over the other end of the pipe. Park the tractor with the wedge on the top side of the axle, lay the pipe over the axle with the extended (uncut) portion against the wedge. Whack the pipe with a BFH and the wedge will break free. One person job.
