D361 engine ?s (tractor vet please)

My dad has a 806D with the D361. The engine was overhauled about 50hrs ago. It was never worked hard or broke in correctly. It was used for light duty loader work and then driven 65 miles at a wide open throttle. The problem is that I believe that the rings never seated. The pan gets really full of deisel and it does not run correctly. It misses and blows alot of fluid out of the exhaust. Can we remove the pistons and install new rings and hone the cylinder or should we do another complete on it. We don't have very much money and my dad was going to do a compression test on it when he got to his brothers house to get the tester. Any suggestions are welcomed
