Get a service manual for it and the manual will tell you how to adjust the shifters side to side. The locking cap screw could have backed out of the end of a shifting rail so that it isn't held against the adjusting screw anymore so the rail can move side to side a little. The interlock ( I call it the 'flipper') could be broken off of the little rod it is welded to but when that happens the tranny usually goes into a false neutral that you can't get out of without lifting the cover and puting things back by hand.
