This happened to my Yanmar 240d also, the gear shifter wouldn't shift into any gear. I thought it would be a big job, so I waited all winter before tackling the problem, Luckly the first thing I did was take off the rubber boot on the shifter there was the problem, a broken pin.
It's spring loaded so put the pin in as you push out the old one, if the pin is gone pull up on the shifter and insert a new pin. Mine works fine now.
I know it's not a JD but may help.

Not familiar with the 730, but my '48 B sometimes needs a little coaxing from one side to the other. All it takes is slightly engage the clutch, moving the transmission gears just enough to allow the shifter to go on over. May be a different story on yours.

Get a service manual for it and the manual will tell you how to adjust the shifters side to side. The locking cap screw could have backed out of the end of a shifting rail so that it isn't held against the adjusting screw anymore so the rail can move side to side a little. The interlock ( I call it the 'flipper') could be broken off of the little rod it is welded to but when that happens the tranny usually goes into a false neutral that you can't get out of without lifting the cover and puting things back by hand. Good luck Jim

That should have an interlock to lock the pawl on that fork. Maybe the fork or something is worn so the lever doesn't release it right ?

Something is worn, bent, out of adjusment, or some combination of these.

This is something that is REALLY TOUGH to fix "over the internet"!

Take a CLOSE look with the cover removed to see what's worn, bent, or out of adjustment, so the slots the end of the shift lever engages with are lined up. IIRC, (I HAVE rebuilt several of these transmissions, but it's been a while.) the shift rails can be adjusted side-to-side a bit, which affects gear mesh AND how the shifter slots line up.

Take a look, and study it out carefully, you'll figure it out! Consult a shop manual as to the correct way to adjust the shift rails.
