This is something that is REALLY TOUGH to fix "over the internet"!

Take a CLOSE look with the cover removed to see what's worn, bent, or out of adjustment, so the slots the end of the shift lever engages with are lined up. IIRC, (I HAVE rebuilt several of these transmissions, but it's been a while.) the shift rails can be adjusted side-to-side a bit, which affects gear mesh AND how the shifter slots line up.

Take a look, and study it out carefully, you'll figure it out! Consult a shop manual as to the correct way to adjust the shift rails.
