The steering box on my 86 dodge (no power steering) has grease in it, from factory. Some years ago I removed one of the bolts holding a cover on it, drilled a small hole through the bolt lenghwise, and installed a grease fitting in the head of the bolt. Now when Igrease the truck I grease the steering box a few strokes of the gun. Grease does work it's way outpast the output shaft, so I know it is full of fresh grease. I would use gear lube in a new box unless it leaked though or had grease in it from factory as mine did. I also had to rebuild, to repair rust and water damage, the unusual universal joint in the steering shaft. Put a grease fitting in it too to fluch out water and keep it full of fresh grease. It is a "T" type of U joint and it also can telescope to allow for any changes in the length of the shaft.
