Grease in steering box ???

Although my owner's manual says to use 140w gearlube on an old Massey Harris that I have here, when I took it all apart I noticed that it had regular grease inside as a lubricant. The operator's manual says "not" to use grease since it has limited lube qualities in that application. I have spoken to a fellow who said the grease is the way to go (he specified to use the white lithium type which is a bit more viscous), especially since the leakage out of the box will be reduced. I have installed new seals when I had everything apart. What would some of you guys recommend?
