Doug, It is VERY common for the insulated "pass-though" bolt on the disributor that the the wire from the coil connects to to short to the distributor case. Try this... breaker points OPEN. Disconnect the PRIMARY wire from the stud sticking out the side of the distributor. Turn the key on. Does the test light show power at the "distributor-side" coil primary terminal now? If so, touch the primary wire to the stud you removed it from. Do you see a spark? Does the test light go out? If "yes", and "yes", the stud (bolt) is shorted where it passes through the distributor, or the points, condensor, or something else in the distributor is shorted out! (REMEMBER, points must be OPEN for this test.) Email me, if you like, 'cause by the time I get back on here tomorrow night, probably, this thread will be a couple of pages back!
