I was in Local 33 (Des Moines) for 6 years. I started out non union ("rat") and have since gone back. Can't beat union money and benefits, period. That's where the compliments will end. I'm a pipefitter myself, but seems to me there's more steady work as a plumber. I don't mind commercial plumbing, but can't stand residential work. Good luck whatever you do, there's good and bad no matter what, where, or who you do it for.
