differant job needed

I've been at this new job for couple weeks now and I can tell it's not going to work out. It's not what I was told nor expecting. My friend loves the work, but I'm absolutely bored out of my mind. Then I found out they only told me I was going to be driving trucks for the majority of the time just to get me hired. After that I decided I'm only here till I find a differant job. I'd like to get into dump trucks but that won't be possible till next spring. So I've thought about getting into plumbing and the thought of becoming a professional firefighter has crossed my mind. I live 10-15min. west of Des Moines, Ia so the job possibilities for either are pretty good. Does anyone know what the educational req. are for entry level firefighters in Iowa, in case I go that route. I am not on the local vol. firefighter dept. due to a couple people on the squad now. I used to know what I wanted to do with my life, but these days I'm not very sure what I want to do. I'd like to find something I greatly enjoy and excel in, but I guess only being 21 allmost 22 I have plenty of time to figure things out.

Rich, It will be easier to get on a larger metropolitan department. Some of the larger departments may have their own fire academy or send you to to get trained. Start looking for for department that are giving tests. That will give you experience taking civil service tests even if it's for a department you don't want to work for. I don't know what the scedule is for departments in that part of the country, but I work 24 on and 48 off. I also get a "Kelly day", which means every 3 weeks I have 5 days in a row off, not to mention vacation days and the ability to trade shifts for time or cash compensation. Plenty of time for a second or third job. (Just wait till you find out how much a wife can spend) It can be a great career and also allow you to do a lot of things you want to and provide a good living. Start young, many departments have only a 25 year requirement to be able to be elgible to retire. Good luck!

Rich,

I don't know the requirements for career firefighters are in your area, but where I'm at, Level 1 is Level 1. We do the same basic training as the career guys... we just don't get paid. I don't think that varies to much by area either, but I could be wrong. A lot of the career guys in this area came into the service through volunteer departments, and some still remain on volunteer departments.... I guess it's worth a shot if you're interested. One guy that comes to mind is on a department where they have 4 paid men with the balance being volunteer. To top this off, he is one of the paid staff on shift, ALONG WITH being the department cheif. That's not really a common situation around here, but there it sits...

Im a lot closer to 40 than 30 and dont have any idea what I want to do when I grow up. Hope I dont ever find out either. Tried the 'growing up' and 'getting old' thing, its way over rated. Try them all, find something that you can tolerate doing, that pays a wage you can live on, with hours that give you time to have the life you want, and lets you live where you want to live. Then dont sweat the rest.

why cant you drive dump trucks til next spring? by the time you're done training for plumbing or firefighting, you'll already be able to drive trucks. here in massachusetts, im in training for our volunteer fire dept and its been every other tuesday night for two years and i finish this fall. for fulltime firefighting, a buddy of mine went to fire academy which was 12 weeks non stop so it's pretty tough to do. as for plumbing, my dad was a diesel mechanic, then a truck driver, then he became a plumber and he's been doing it a long time and likes it and the pay. but theres training involved too. i think he went to 3 or 4 years of night classes to get his plumbing license. but whatever you choos, i hope you like it and are sucessful

Aren't too many people that do the hiring that won't tell you what you want to hear to get you hired. Generally speaking, they aren't the ones that will be working with you in the field.

You won't have any trouble getting into the plumbing or even pipefitting trades in Iowa at this point. Alot of work at the time. I think your biggest decision will be to go either union or non-union. Give that some consideration before jumping in. Whatever you decide, you'll start out digging holes, cutting pipe, and putting up hangers for other people before you get to have a little fun yourself.

Right now, most of the truck companies that run dump trucks are getting ready to shut down for the year. I do have a buddy from my last job that started at one bout this time last year, I'll give him a call and see what's going on at his company.

I've done a little bit of plumbing and enjoyed what I've done, which is why I'm thinking of going that route. I'm thinking of trying some small non-union companies first, might have a chance to move along little quicker. I'm not a huge fan of unions, but they do have good training and benefits. Anyone on here member of the Iowa union?

I was in Local 33 (Des Moines) for 6 years. I started out non union ("rat") and have since gone back. Can't beat union money and benefits, period. That's where the compliments will end. I'm a pipefitter myself, but seems to me there's more steady work as a plumber. I don't mind commercial plumbing, but can't stand residential work. Good luck whatever you do, there's good and bad no matter what, where, or who you do it for.
