The Detroit Diesels are one and the same as GM Diesels. Detroit Diesel was a division of General Motors. GM did make some other diesel engines, but the Detroit Diesel division handled the two-stroke diesels. Also, the only GM diesels to see any farm tractor usage were the two-stroke Diesels. So, really, calling them a Detroit or a GM is accurate both ways. I've heard some people call the same engine a "Screamin Detroit" or a "Screamin Jimmy". The Oliver 990 ran only the 3-71 Detroit diesel, as I recall. The Super 99 could come with either a Waukesha 6 cylinder gas, a Waukesha-Oliver 6 cylinder diesel, or the 3-71 two-stroke GM diesel. With the Detroit in it, it was labelled an Oliver Supper 99 GM. Hope I didn't muddy the waters any! Red Tech
