I worked at Detroit Diesel in the 60s They made 1-53s , 2-53 , 3-53 , 4-53 , 6-53 , 1-71 , 2-71 , 3-71 , 4-1 , 6-71 , 6V-71 , 8V-71 , 12V-71 , 16V-71 , & 6-110 later was for large earth
moving eqpt A lot of the 16V-71 were used on tug boats hooked to common torque converter out put was about 1600 or 1700 HP . each engine was 800 HP non turbo charged 875 HP turbo charged . they no longer make 2 cycle were replaced by 4 cycle .

Back in the sixtys, we ran Hancock 282 elevating motorscrapers. They used a Oliver 99 tractor without the front axle. They attached it to an 8 cubic yard hancock scraper and steered it with hydraulic rams. Two engines were offered; the standard Waukesha and the Detriot Diesel 4-53. The 4-53 had more horse power and performed much better. (4-53 ment 4 cylinders and 53 cubic inches per cylinder). The governed RPM on the 4-53 was 2800. We used to remove the baffles in the muffler. Made a real sweet sound, but we soon got used to saying huh a lot!

The Detroit Diesels are one and the same as GM Diesels. Detroit Diesel was a division of General Motors. GM did make some other diesel engines, but the Detroit Diesel division handled the two-stroke diesels. Also, the only GM diesels to see any farm tractor usage were the two-stroke Diesels.

So, really, calling them a Detroit or a GM is accurate both ways.

I've heard some people call the same engine a "Screamin Detroit" or a "Screamin Jimmy".

The Oliver 990 ran only the 3-71 Detroit diesel, as I recall. The Super 99 could come with either a Waukesha 6 cylinder gas, a Waukesha-Oliver 6 cylinder diesel, or the 3-71 two-stroke GM diesel. With the Detroit in it, it was labelled an Oliver Supper 99 GM.

Hope I didn't muddy the waters any!

GM diesel was re-named Detroit Diesel so Ford heavy truck owners would not be offended by having a GM engine under the hood.

About 30 years ago I was in a Frame and spring repair shop in Dallas getting the rear springs re-arched for my car and they had a Pherd Cab Over truck tractor in there doing some type of work to it. I said something to the driver about the jimmmy 6-71 in his truck and he quickly said that"s a DETROIT Diesel not a jimmy!!! OooKay... I think he believed it. I have a John Deere 440ICD and it clearly says GM Diesel on the valve cover of the 2-53.

Some 99's had gas engines in them too, I think.

GM Diesel was the Canadian General Motors division that built EMD locomotives and Mowag armoured vehicles. EMD locomotives are still being built there (and still in LaGrange), but no longer for GM. Armoured vehicles are also still being built there, but now for General Dynamics under the Stryker product name.
Nothing to do with tractors, or Detroit Diesel engines .... I had to chime in though because "GM Diesel" has a close connection to me.
I"ve worked designing both products over the last 18 years.

I worked at Detroit Diesel Allison(Indianapolis)and always wondered where all the EMD bearings made at Plant #11 went to....thx MAC! The Diesel block line was in Plant #5.

Now it is owned by Rolls-Royce, Plt #11 was torn down a few years ago and half of Plt #5 will be demolished in the next year.

GM diesel and Detroit Diesel are the same thing. Detroit Diesel was a division of General Motors.
