did it look like a frosted flake after it dried upsome? If so it was late blight. BURN all the refuse , vines, etc and get rid of the tubers...send them to the landfill, or they will help reinfect next years crop. Seeing as you had it this year, it has a good chance of coming back, keep plants sprayed with a chlorothalinil fungicide weekly next year and you shouldnt have a problem, be aware that certain Late Blight strain will also attack tomato.
