Older charging systems used a third brush to regulate the current and let the battery set the voltage. Those have only a cutout, often in a round can, no voltage regulator. And with an 8 volt battery they don't need adjusting. They'd probably charge a 12 volt battery too without adjustment.

The NAA is new enough to have a voltage regulator, not a third brush generator so its regulator will have to be adjusted.

The problem with a third brush generator is that it tends to overcharge the battery if the engine is run a long time between starts. That's why you run the lights to divert current from the battery after a while.
