To keep the 8-Volt battery fully-charged, the voltage regulator, now set at about 7.4 Volts, needs to be set UP to about 9.8 Volts. This is NOT a job for the inexperienced, and it's hard to explain just how to do it, as there are about a zillion syles of regulator "guts". Is there a "Mom and Pop" auto electrical shop in your area that has been around for a while? If so, it might be well worth it to have them set up the regulator's voltage, to avoid the chance of letting all the smoke out of the charging system by attempting it yourself. If you want to try, the basic procedure is to SLIGHTLY increase the spring tension on the relay unit inside the voltage regulator that is wound with the finest (smallest diameter) wire. A TINY little bit of increased spring tension goes a long way to increasing the voltage setpoint, so take it easy. Sometimes, there is an adjusting screw, sometimes the tab the spring hooks to must be carefully bent a "tad". Disconnect the battery BEFORE removing the regulator's cover, and re-connect it only after you are done inside the regulator, and then start it up, and check the results of your adjustment, repeating the whole procedure, if further adjustment is needed.
