It used to be that there was a surplus of natural gas in this country, but that's no longer the case. Much of the new generation capacity is gas-fired, which has driven demand to the point that we now import gas from overseas. This fuel is brought in as liquified natural gas in huge tankers. Since natural gas is easily shipped across the country in pipelines, having a gas field in your back yard doesn't guarantee cheap fuel. And companies are building new pipelines as fast as they can.
